While Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has made Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) as acompulsory criteria for giving Occupancy Certificate (OC) to housing societies, there is no STP plant in its jurisdiction. And shockingly, untreated wastes are being released into creeks and nullahs, reveals a Right To Information (RTI) application.
So much of awareness is being generated for a clean and pollution-free city and Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiating 'Swachch Bharat Abhiyan' for a clean India, but it seems that the civic body does not believes in the same.
Thane-based activist Rajiv Datta, who filed the RTI, alleges, "Lakes and creeks across Thane are getting polluted. Crores of rupees have been released as fund by the centralgovernment as well as the state government. Where is this money going? In the name of mega projects, work is not being completed on time."
In the RTI, Datta had asked the corporation to provide details of STP within its jurisdiction with respect to their location and capacity of treating waste, the working condition with respect to available records in reply to which TMC has replied that they don't own a STP.
The activist has also asked information about how many MLD of nullah and gutter water has been treated before discharging. Again, the civic officials do not have any record.
Pollution in the city has increased multifold and almost all creeks and lakes are getting polluted to a bigger extent. Activists allege that though every year lot of money is spent in the name of cleaning and beautification, but it is all an eyewash.
Datta added, "It is ironical that for housing societies STP is a must, but the corporation does not believe and this is evident from the RTI." TMC public relations officer and deputy civic commissioner Sandeep Malvi said, "Work is under progress, however, the waste is given conventional treatement before disposing them of into nullah or creek."
