The Kamayani Express and Janata Express derailed while crossing the same bridge in Madhya Pradesh.
HARDA, MADHYA PRADESH:  24 people have died after ten bogies of two packed trains derailed near Harda in Madhya Pradesh within minutes of each other late on Tuesday night. Over 300 people have been rescued so far; nearly 40 are injured.
Here are the latest developments:
  1. Six coaches of the Mumbai-Varanasi Kamayani Express derailed around 11:30 pm while crossing a culvert near the Kudawa railway station, around 25 kilometres from Harda. Minutes later, four coaches and the engine of the Jabalpur-Mumbai Janata Express, which was travelling in the opposite direction, derailed.
  2. The track caved in due to heavy rain and waterlogging in the area, leading to the derailment, said Railways spokesperson Anil Saxena.
  3. "Enquiry ordered,Ex gratia to be paid immediately.Flooding of tracks due to very heavy downpour.Will make detailed statement to parliament," tweeted Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu.
  4. Police and doctors have been deployed to the accident site, with television footage showing medical supplies being piled on a nearby station platform and rescuers combing through tilted carriages.
  5. "Rescue operations are in full swing. Things are under control and most of the people have been rescued," Mr Saxena told NDTV.
  6. "The two train accidents in Madhya Pradesh are deeply distressing. Deeply pained over the loss of lives. Condolences to families of deceased," tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  7. Rescuers said operations were being hampered by flooding in the area with officials working through the night, mostly in darkness.
  8. "The entire area has been reeling under heavy rainfall for the last few days. The roads are badly damaged, even the access road," Mr Saxena said.
  9. All private and government hospitals in Harda were alerted and made ready to accommodate the victims.
  10. Rail traffic in the area has been hit, with at least 25 trains from Mumbai being diverted. Trains from Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh were temporarily stopped. Sources said some of the trains may be diverted via Rajasthan-Kota route.

Bhopal (August 4): Several passengers were feared dead when two express trains tonight derailed while crossing a bridge on swollen Machak river near Harda in Madhya Pradesh, senior district officials said.
Kamayani Express enroute to Varanasi from Mumbai derailed near Harda, about 160 kms from Bhopal, around 11.45 PM while the Janata Express derailed around the same time.
“There was water on tracks and the bridge was submerged. So the last bogies of Kamayani Express got derailed. Simultaneously, on the other track the engines and coaches of the Janata Express also got derailed,” Railway spokesperson Anil Saxena said.
He said that some casualties are feared.
Harda Collector Rajnish Shrivastava told PTI that derailment took place near Khirkiya and Harda station on Machak river.
Some bogies and engines of both the trains are in water, he said.
Hoshangabad Division Commissioner V K Batham said that Janata Express also derailed at the same spot on its way to Mumbai from Jabalpur.
“Rushing emergency medical & other relief personnel to spot. darkness, water creating hurdles but ordered all possible help. Trying our best (sic), ” Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu tweeted. He said efforts were underway to pull back the bogies.
Minister said Railway administration and MP govt are working together to rescue passengers of Kamyani express accident. He further said that GM, DRM,RPF and medical staff have been directed to rush to the spot.

The accident took place while the train was crossing the bridge on the Machak River, where the water level was high due to heavy rainfall said a senior official in Mumbai.
At least 24 people have been killed after the Kamayani Express from Mumbai to Varanasi and the Mumbai-Jabalpur Janata Express derailed near Kudawa railway station, about 30 kilometres from Harda district in south western Madhya Pradesh, late on Tuesday night.
More than 300 people have been rescued after the two trains derailed while crossing a swollen Machak river, said officials. According to officials, six coaches of Kamayani Express and three coaches plus the engine of Janata Express were derailed late last night as the base material on the tracks got washed away. “The mishap took place around 11.30 PM on Tuesday as base material of the tracks got washed away in heavy rains.

5:30 am: In all six coaches, including four sleeper coaches, of the Kamayani Express derailed.
“There was water on tracks and the bridge was submerged. So the last bogies of Kamayani Express got derailed. Simultaneously, on the other track the engines and coaches of the Janata Express also got derailed,” Railway spokesperson Anil Saxena said.
” We personally contacted passengers based on the data from our system. We get the mobile number of passengers when they book the tickets. Some of them said that after the accident, fearing death with water entering the bogies, they rushed to other bogies and that there are no casualties so far. However, we  have not been able to contact other passengers as possibly their mobile phones must have been lost,” said Alok Badkul, senior commercial manager, Mumbai division.

3:45 am: CPRO Piyush Mathur said the incident did not occur on the bridge as was initially thought.
After disconnecting the derailed bogies, the Kamayani Express was taken to the Bhirangi Railway Station.
The incident occurred before midnight on bridge number 648/1 on the Machan River, where the water level was high due to heavy rainfall said a senior official in Mumbai.
Reports reaching Mumbai also said that another train – the 13201 Janata Express from Patna and headed to Mumbai Lokmanya Tilak Terminus also derailed at the same spot and around the same time.

Each coach has a capacity to carry a minimum of 70 passengers. ” At present we are unable to connect with anyone on the trains with water levels proving to be a hurdle,” Ojha said.
Railway Ministry has directed senior officials to ensure emergency services such as medical help and food at the accident spot. The Railway Protection Force has also been rushed to the spot.
Railway minister, Suresh Prabhu has said that the Railways and the Madhya Pradesh government are working jointly on the rescue operation.

* पश्चिम मध्य रेलवे के जनसंपर्क अधिकारी पीयूष माथुर के अनुसार पटरियां पानी में डूब जाने से इनके नीचे की सामग्री बह गई जिससे कामायनी एक्सप्रेस के सात डिब्बे और जनता एक्सप्रेस के तीन डिब्बे तथा इंजन पटरी से उतर गए। माथुर ने कहा कि यह घटना हरदा के नजदीक खिरकिया और भिरंगी के बीच हुई।
* उन्होंने कहा, 'हादसा मंगलवार रात करीब 11 बजकर 30 मिनट पर हुआ क्योंकि भारी बारिश के चलते पटरियों के नीचे की सामग्री बह गई। 
* मध्य प्रदेश के जनसंपर्क आयुक्त अनुपम राजन ने बताया कि खिड़किया और हरदा स्टेशनों के बीच घटनास्थल से अब तक 24 शव बरामद हुए हैं जिनमें नौ पुरूष, 10 महिलाएं और पांच बच्चे शामिल हैं।
* रेलवे प्रवक्ता अनिल सक्सेना के अनुसार, 'पटरियों पर पानी था और पुल डूबा हुआ था। इस वजह से कामायनी एक्सप्रेस के आखिरी डिब्बे पटरी से उतर गए। लगभग उसी समय दूसरी पटरी पर जनता एक्सप्रेस का इंजन और डिब्बे भी पटरी से उतर गए।'
* हरदा के कलेक्टर रजनीश श्रीवास्तव ने बताया कि खिड़किया और हरदा स्टेशन के पास माचक नदी पर घटना घटी। उन्होंने कहा कि दोनों ट्रेनों के कुछ डिब्बे और इंजन पानी में हैं।
* जबलपुर से मुंबई जा रही जनता एक्सप्रेस भी उसी जगह पटरी से उतरी गई। होशंगाबाद के डिवीजनल कमिश्नर वी के बाथम ने यह जानकारी दी।
