The 1951 Census of India was the 9th in a series of censuses held in Indiaevery decade since 1871.[1] It is also the first census after independence andPartition of India.
The population of India was counted as 36,10,88,090 consisting of 18,823,090 males and 17,714,346 females.[2] Total population increased by 4,24,27,510, 11.5% more than the 318,660,580 people counted during the 1941 census.[3]No census was done for Jammu and Kashmir in 1951 and its figures were interpolated from 1941 and 1961 state census.[4]
Religious demographics[edit]
Hindus comprises 30.36 crore(84.1%) and Muslims were 3.54 crore(9.8%) in 1951 census.[5][6][7][8][9] Hindus comprised about 66 per cent of the population of India before partition.
